Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
01
What is PMHE
PMHE stands for Pathways to Mental Health Equity Working Group. It is a community-engaged research and action initiative based at Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health. PMHE brings together researchers, student researchers, community partners, and young adult advisors to co-create mental health solutions that are culturally responsive and community-driven. PMHE is a long-term platform focused on advancing mental health equity for Black and Brown young adults in Philadelphia, not a one-time study.
02
Who runs PMHE?
PMHE is led by Dr. Kofoworola D.A. Williams, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health and Prevention at Drexel University. The team also includes Bitanya Ayalew who’s the YAAC Coordinator, graduate students, and research assistants. You can reach the team at PMHE@drexel.edu.
03
Is PMHE only at Drexel?
No. Although PMHE is based at Drexel University, it is a community-focused initiative designed for Black and African American young adults throughout Philadelphia. We encourage applications from both Drexel students and young adults who are not affiliated with Drexel.
04
What is the Young Adult Advisory Council (YAAC)?
The YAAC is a leadership and advisory council for Black and African American young adults ages 18 to 24 in Philadelphia. Council members share their perspectives, advise on PMHE's programs and research, and help shape the direction of the initiative—all with the goal of advancing mental health equity for Black and African American young adults. During Year 1, YAAC members will have the opportunity to participate in an optional digital photovoice research project. The YAAC is designed to grow over time, and members are co-creators of what PMHE becomes, not just participants in a study.
05
What is the difference between the YAAC and the photovoice study?
The YAAC is the ongoing advisory council for PMHE, while the digital photovoice project is an optional Year 1 research activity available to YAAC members. Digital photovoice is a participatory storytelling research method in which participants use photographs and digital media to document and share their lived experiences and perspectives. In addition to the photovoice project, YAAC members may provide feedback on PMHE programs and materials, advise on outreach efforts, and help shape future initiatives. Participation in the photovoice project is completely voluntary and is not required to serve on the YAAC.
06
Who can join the YAAC?
To be eligible, you must identify as Black or African American, be between the ages of 18 and 24, live in the Philadelphia area, and have access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer with Wi-Fi.
07
Do I need research experience or a specific background?
No. You do not need any prior research experience, academic background, or mental health expertise. What matters most is your perspective as a young adult in Philadelphia, and your interest in contributing to mental health equity work. Any training needed to participate in PMHE activities will be provided.
08
I am a Drexel student. Can I still apply?
Yes. Drexel students who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply. PMHE is actively recruiting from both Drexel and the broader Philadelphia community.
08
What if I am 25 or older?
The current eligibility criteria specify ages 18 to 24. If you are outside this range but interested in PMHE's work, please reach out to PMHE@drexel.edu. There may be other ways to get involved as PMHE grows.
09
What will I be doing as a YAAC member?
During Year 1, YAAC members may:
-
attend orientation and monthly community-building meetings;
-
advise the PMHE team on outreach, materials, and program activities;
-
provide feedback that helps shape future mental health resources and programming;
-
participate in the optional digital photovoice project; and
-
choose whether to participate in a public exhibition or other dissemination activities related to the photovoice project.
10
How much time does participation require?
During Year 1, members should expect to spend approximately 8–10 hours participating between August and December. This includes orientation, community meetings, advisory activities, and, if you choose to participate, the digital photovoice project. If you choose to continue serving on the YAAC after the Fall, members may be invited to participate in monthly meetings and additional activities.
11
Is participation paid?
Yes. YAAC members receive $25 for each eligible session they attend and a $50 completion bonus for completing the Year 1 program. Participants who complete all Year 1 activities may receive up to $150 in total compensation. If you do not complete all activities, compensation will be prorated based on the sessions and activities you complete.
12
Does receiving compensation affect anything else?
Compensation is provided in recognition of your time, effort, and contributions to the YAAC. Accepting compensation does not affect the voluntary nature of your participation. You may choose to withdraw from the YAAC or the optional photovoice project at any time without penalty. If you withdraw, you will be compensated for the eligible activities you have already completed.
13
Will my personal information be kept private?
Yes. We take your privacy seriously. Information you share with the PMHE team will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by law and university policies. Your personal information will be stored securely, and only authorized members of the research team will have access to it. When research findings are shared, identifying information will be removed whenever possible.
14
What about the photos I share? Who will see them?
You will have control over how your photographs and stories are used. Before beginning the photovoice project, we will provide training on ethical photography, including protecting the privacy of others. If you choose to share your photos publicly through exhibitions or other activities, we will ask for your permission first.
15
What if I feel uncomfortable during a session?
Your well-being is important to us. You may skip any question, choose not to share, take a break, or withdraw from an activity at any time without penalty. The PMHE team can also provide information about mental health and support resources if needed.
16
What happens after I submit my application?
You will receive a confirmation email within 24-48 hours of submitting your application. The PMHE team will review your application and reach out within –2 weeks. If you are selected to move forward, you will be invited to a brief 15-to-20-minute interview with a member of the team. After the interview, you will hear back about the final decision within about a week.
17
What if I am not selected?
If you are not selected for this cohort, you will receive a personal email from the team. PMHE is a long-term initiative, and this will not be the only opportunity to get involved. We encourage everyone who applies to stay connected, as future cohorts, community events, and other opportunities will be coming.
18
Why should I join the YAAC?
YAAC members have the opportunity to connect with other young adults, influence mental health initiatives that affect their communities, learn about community-engaged research, develop leadership and research partnership skills, and help shape PMHE as it grows. Members are valued as partners whose lived experiences help guide the initiative. We'd love to hear from you. Email us at PMHE@drexel.edu with any questions about eligibility, participation, or the application process.
